The Weekend of Man 2022 was a return to normalcy after two very non-normal years. Double-Deuce, as it is and will be known henceforth, saw Men retreat to comfort zones of tradition, comradery, and terrifying weather that have been mainstays of Weekend of Man pasts.
The Pioneering Men began their northern sojourn under bright and sunny skies. Departing the Twin Cities shortly after dawn, The Bobocracy retrieved Sam Adequate from his affluent suburban enclave and headed eastward towards Undrafted Jeff's and the primary storage of Weekend of Man equipment.
The next seven hours would see them cross the Minnesota and Wisconsin state line not less than three times, hugging the border of the states as close as reasonably could be followed by road. Townie bars, casinos, and small town brewpubs were discovered. Two interesting discoveries during this quest are of note:
At approximately 4:30 pm, the Men approached their rendezvous with the rest of the Pioneers outside Cotton, Minnesota. They would do so dodging a tornado warning and rotating wall cloud less than a mile north of their position. They figured that El Toro Motor Lounge is as good a place as any to get sucked up by Mother Nature, and as such, proceeded inside for tap Schmidt's and the possibility they would see first-hand the "Finger of God". Luckily the front moved eastward quickly, while Cinnamon! blew dollar after dollar trying to retrieve White Claw cans from an arcade claw game.
Skies remained cloudy the next day. Breakfast was had at the local Subway, housed within a gas station. Men involved themselves in a city council meeting taking place at the same time and location, participating in vociferous debates about local matters to which they had no knowledge, yet which amused them all greatly.
The Super Game Fisher was put to sail and many a freshwater fish were caught in and around the Honey Hole. Later that afternoon, Undrafted Jeff and The Bobocracy would finally explore Honey Hole Point. Much to their amazement, they discovered an exceptional piece of land to which many Men would later enjoy a sunset bonfire. Acquisition of this spit of land remains a top priority for the Weekend of Man Alumni Association.
Rounds of golf were played on the ever-spectacular courses at Giants Ridge and Fortune Bay. A distinct void of photographic evidence of golf would indicate one of two scenarios: Decent but unremarkable golf was played with noting to note; or terrible golf was played and too many on-course beverages were consumed to encourage any Man to take a picture.
Gray skies finally broke mid-morning on Friday while Men played the Wilderness, bringing pleasant weather to Men for the rest of the weekend.
Scores were kept to support the bookkeeping necessary for the 2022 Ironhead Cup. Played as an inidividual best ball across three days, each Man's handicapped net score would be totaled to par. Emerging victorious was Bruce-in-Law with a stunning -25 to par. He holds the Marquee de Sod trophy for WOFM23 (The Weekend of Man's 2022/2023 schedule year) and will represent next year as defending champion with a significantly modified handicap.
On Friday evening the second annual BCASTI (The Bruce C. Annual Spirits Tasting Invitational) took place featuring Aquavit, the schnapps of the Nordics. It was a tip-of-the-hat to the Weekend of Man Ten (2016), and the first foray into Brennivin by undereducated and inexperienced Men who were not in Reykjavik years before. Sprits from Norway, Iceland, Denmark, and the United States were on offer to all Men. Most Men claiming to be whiskey aficionados turned their noses to these clear spirits, which to this day draws the ire of The Bobocracy.
Extensive construction traffic on Interstate 35 prevented a fast retreat back to the Twin Cities for all Men as Double-Deuce came to a close. Despite it the weather, belligerent Brennivin drinkers, and construction traffic, the year accomplished its goal, re-grounding Men in the core traditions and targeted experiences that make the Weekend of Man so special.
Skol, Men.
